What Type of Baby Crib is Best?

If you’re thinking about purchasing a new baby crib there’s a few things to keep in mind. Some baby cribs contain features that you may or may not need depending on your unique circumstances. If you’d like to keep costs down you can look for a baby crib that contains the least amount of extra features. Of course, you should also try to find the safest baby crib you can afford as safety is a feature you and your baby simply can’t live without.

Do you need a convertible baby crib? If you don’t plan on having more children in the near future you might want to consider purchasing a convertible baby crib. A lot of people like to refer to these types of cribs as “convertibles.” Unfortunately, you won’t be able to cruise the town in your baby crib :-) but once your infant gets older you’ll be able to convert the baby crib into a toddler bed. A downside of convertible baby cribs is that a lot of times the toddler bed ends up looking like the original crib. This may or may not be acceptable to you. Each crib is different. However, making the transition from crib to toddler bed may be a lot easier on your toddler because they are already accustomed to the bed they sleep in. Some baby cribs will also convert into a full-size bed but you usually need to purchase an additional kit in order to do this. If you’d like to eventually convert your baby crib into a full-size bed you may want to consider purchasing the kit right away instead of waiting until your child gets older because the kit may no longer be able and then you’re stuck.

You may also want to take the finish of your baby’s crib into consideration. The most popular crib color is white although there are many other different finishes available. Be sure whatever finish you choose that the paint or wood doesn’t include any serious defects such as splintered wood or peeling paint. Be sure to inspect all parts carefully while you are unpacking and assembling your new baby crib.

Drop side baby cribs may seem convenient but recent recalls have raised concerns about how safe these cribs are for babies. Consumer Reports no longer recommends purchasing cribs with drop sides. You should purchase a crib with fixed sides until more information and tests have been to evaluate the safety of baby cribs with drop sides. Currently there are only minimal safety standards and guidelines established for these types of baby cribs. You certainly don’t want to risk the health and safety of your newborn just for the sake of convenience.
